Siebel Upgrade for Global Industrial Conglomerate

Our client, a global industrial conglomerate, had used Siebel for more than a decade but needed to upgrade and deploy Open UI - quickly and successfully!
The client's Siebel IP 2013 deployment made use of a wide variety of functionality across sales and service, and also included an eCustomer application to allow customers to browse product catalogs and order spare parts online.
The employee-facing application used the Siebel High Interactivity (HI) Client, but given the end of support for IE8/HI there was a need to prepare for an Open UI roll-out. However, some crucial functionality was missing in Open UI in IP 2013– for example Shuttle Applets, iHelp and the Dispatch Board. The client therefore first needed to upgrade to the latest version of Siebel before rolling out Open UI.
We worked with the internal team to provide expertise for both the upgrade process, and for harnessing the latest Open UI techniques to develop a variety of enhancements – some of which had previously been implemented in HI, and some of which took advantage of the new possibilities available in Open UI.
This was one of the first upgrades to the target version globally, but being on the leading edge also meant that our client was one of the first organizations to encounter certain upgrade issues and bugs.

Months-Long Project Delays Averted

One of the bugs encountered during the upgrade highlights how important true expertise is to a successful Siebel upgrade – and how a lack thereof can cause delays lasting months.
The application used the Siebel Document Engine to generate proposals and other documents. However, in the upgraded version this engine contains a bug that meant that sections in the generated documents were frequently dropped or lost. When this happened, there would be no error presented to the user, meaning that crucial document content was omitted without notification.
In order to implement a full workaround, Accelsior’s consultant utilized their unparalleled expertise in a variety of Siebel development techniques to create an innovative and robust resolution with no loss of functionality.
In the meantime, the software bug was submitted to Oracle, and a target patch version for the fix published. However, the target patch was pushed out several times – the bug being eventually addressed more than half a year after we first reported it.
Consultants lacking Accelsior’s level of expertise would have been unable to provide a workaround to the bug – and given the criticality of the functionality, the upgrade could have been delayed at least 6 months. However, thanks to the skills Accelsior brought to the table, the project completed on time and on budget in just 4 months from the first kick-off meeting to the go-live, despite the challenges with being an early adopter!
